How to: Photography Basics
A foundational photography guide
Yes, it would help if you did your homework when starting a hobby or a business. I hired a business coach (Madhura Joshi), and in the process, I discovered a ton of areas I needed to improve or refocus in my practice. Ever since I began working with Madhura, I have started reading more books on business development. Currently, I am making my way through “Everyone Should Be a Millionaire” by Rachel Rodgers.
This book alone has given me a good dozen more ideas to incorporate into my business and make it better for my clients and myself—one of them being developing my passion for education. In post-secondary, I was always involved with organizing exhibitions, volunteering to head my photography department in the biannual Show & Sale, directing the Nicole Craig Gallery, submitting my work to artist calls, writing artist statements, you name it, and I’ve jumped right into it. All this was to give back to my community, get involved with fellow photographers and artists and spread my passion for the arts. Mentorship has always been something I want to explore further and lend a helping hand to emerging talent.
Today, as the owner of my own Calgary photography business, I am eager to share my photography knowledge with anyone interested in starting their journey in this field. While I hold a BDes and majored in Photography, I firmly believe that a 4-year degree is not a prerequisite for creating stunning work. What you do need, however, is a solid technical foundation to master your equipment, produce well-edited final products, and create beautifully rendered prints.
This is where “How to: Photography Basics” comes to the rescue! I have compiled a foundational guide on basic knowledge every photographer should have to capture a beautiful photograph! The guide goes over the purpose of Photography, basics of your equipment, exposure triangle, lighting, post-processing basics and more. It is short and sweet, and I highly recommend it if you are a newbie looking to get started or a seasoned professional looking to brush up on your tech definitions. Learning never stops, and I hope to develop more in-depth guides on every aspect of Photography to help you in your journey!
Also an honourable mention goes to Valerie Richer Photography for taking this photo! If you haven’t read my Community over Competition Blog, it’s a fun one to read! We have come a long way together and it is always a delight to have friends in the industry to help one another!
