Calgary Family Photography: Tips & Tricks for Photographing Children

Picture this scenario: You are running late for your photoshoot stuck in the Calgary traffic, your kids are feeling stressed and frustrated, your partner is overwhelmed, the minutes are ticking by, and you get bombarded by guilt feelings for not arriving on the dot for a shoot you are paying for. Meltdowns are starting, and you want to have one nice photo of your family together to look back on with fond memories years later. Sounds stressful.

Well, here is the reality! Have fun! That's it. Fun! Play with your kids, chase and tickle and make silly jokes and don't have expectations! That is the secret to having a successful shoot! It's not the pose or bribery (although ice cream is a favourite choice even for me) or how you are dressed or have perfectly set hair, it's the genuine smiles and joy that I see on your face that count. Bring favourite toys that your little ones love and want photos with, snacks, water and comfy shoes. Make it a fun date. Even after the session ends, you can picnic with your family! Calgary offers some amazing landscapes and spots in the parks. It's the experience that counts and will have a lasting impression on everyone. These simple steps will provide the best outcome with amazing candid photos!

But what if a family member is not cooperating no matter what you try? Breathe and know it's okay. Not everyone has a good day, but some extra time will help them settle or overcome feeling down. Chat with your photographer to see if the shoot can accommodate spare time to help your child feel better or have the session moved to a different time/date. If they bring their favourite toy, they can be photographed with it and have them eased into more photos. Having a snack can help them feel more comfortable while others are being photographed. That way, they have time to observe and see what the photographer is doing. They can see what the camera is like and do a few shots themselves for practice. It just takes some time to get to know who is photographing you.

Also, a good technique is spinning or lifting them high up from the ground! Most times, the smiles appear on their own. They are thrilled to play with Mom and Dad and have you all to themselves! Now, let’s try those techniques by booking you in for your Calgary family session!
